This storyline is honestly more valid than a great many I've seen before. Both on the internet and some particularly bad novels I read.
The Herald-Mage trilogy. Awesome setting, interesting story, but more than half of the entire trilogy is spent concentrating on how incredibly gay the protagonist is. He's seduced by barely legal boy half his age in the third. He dies holding off an army and there's afterword of the boy as an old man dying in a mystical forest haunted by his lover...
That being said, I believe this is a very valid story you have come up with, and I have seen much worse.
